He studies media freedom, censorship and hate propaganda. His books include: <em>Hate Spin: The Manufacture of Religious Offense and its Threat to Democracy<\/em> (MIT Press, 2016); <em>Red Lines: Political Cartoons and the Struggle against Censorship<\/em> (with Sonny Liew, MIT Press, 2021); and <em>Media and Power in Southeast Asia<\/em> (with Gayathry Venkiteswaran, Cambridge, 2019). He received his PhD in communication from Stanford University and holds a master\u2019s from Columbia University\u2019s School of Journalism. Before joining academia, Professor George was a journalist at <em>The Straits Times<\/em> in Singapore. He continues to practice professional journalism as the editor and publisher of What\u2019s Up, an independent monthly current affairs newspaper for Singapore schoolchildren.
